At Threshfield Primary School we want the children to have a strong understanding of who they are: as a person, a learner, a citizen and a friend.

We want them to know how to look after themselves: physically and mentally.

Therefore, we recognise and promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle.  We strongly belief that in order for children to project this into their adult lives, they need strong foundations. These strong foundations are built through learning and practical experiences.

The health and safety of our pupils is of upmost importance and therefore we ensure that opportunities to learn, develop and put their knowledge into practice are seen as essential and embedded throughout our strategies

Healthy Choices: we have worked closely with our school cook to ensure the meals offered at school meet the national food standards and include all the requirements of a healthy, balanced diet. For children on packed lunches, we have advice on our school website to support parents with the contents of lunch box.

Knowledge of a healthy diet is also taught discreetly through our Science and Design and Technology curriculums. There children’s knowledge is built upon as they move through the school, putting this knowledge into practice through practical cooking and baking activities, in the specifically created facilities.

Healthy Body: we have a strong commitment to ensuring our children leave school physically literate; understanding how their body works, how they fuel it but also to develop not only knowledge but skills, passion, competitiveness and enjoyment in sport. We recognise the specialist talents and knowledge needed to enable children to reach their full potential, so we use specialist teachers to lead elements of our Physical Education curriculum. By using Kanga Sports, Wharfedale Rugby Club and Skipton Tennis Club, we provide our children with enhanced experiences, including competitions. Our staff support these sessions to develop transferable knowledge and skills.

For our key stage 2 pupils, we hire the local secondary school facilities to ensure our children can have directed teaching in both swimming and a broad and balanced P.E. curriculum. Our dedication to swimming means our children leave our school with the ability and knowledge to swim. Within our curriculum enhancements, we ensure that all children have the opportunity to successfully achieve their lifesavers qualification in year 6 as well as completing and passing a first aid course.  We also provide a range of sporting clubs, including: American Sports, running club and Huff and Puff.

Mental Health:  we are aware, and ensure our children are, of the benefits that an active lifestyle has for your mental health. In order to achieve this understanding, we provide children with discrete teaching throughout their time at Threshfield to promote good mental health. Children are taught form an early age, of the importance of looking after yourself and how to promote good mental health in yourself. Enhanced activities give children the opportunities to use mindfulness, thought labyrinths and personal development time to consider their own triggers, ways to maintain and when and how to seek help from others.

Positivity regarding body image and an understanding of how outside factors, e.g. social media , can affect this is essential in our learning and is a large part of our transition programme.

We work hard at Threshfield Primary School to remove any stigma from the teachings and discussions around mental health.

Keeping safe: we want our children to be courageous and adventurous; excited to the explore the beautiful world in front of them. However, we also want our children to do it safely. There are a lot of dangers in our world and although we want the to be confident enough to explore it we want them to do it with the correct knowledge and intelligence which will keep them safe. Safeguarding is paramount in all aspects of our school. It is embedded throughout our curriculum, assemblies and is central to our enrichment and enhancement activities. We ensure that children recognise and understand the importance of it.
